The penalties for hazardous waste crimes

From the unauthorized disposal of hazardous waste to polluting the water supply, there are a wide variety of environmental crimes. For businesses and individuals, being accused of one of these crimes can spell disaster and carry severe consequences. At Joseph S. Friedberg Chartered, we understand the many challenges that people who are facing these allegations often encounter in Minneapolis, and other parts of Minnesota.

If you are accused of an environmental crime, you may face steep fines and even time behind bars, according to the Revisor of Statutes. For example, if you are charged with illegally transporting, storing or treating hazardous waste, you could face up to $25,000 in fines and three years behind bars (or $50,000 in fines and five years in prison if it is your second offense). Hazardous waste crimes take many forms and it is important to understand the laws in Minnesota. Transporting hazardous waste with no license or to an unauthorized facility is against the law. If you are accused of abandoning or illegally disposing of hazardous waste, you could be fined as much as $50,000 and spend five years in prison.

When it comes to pollution, crimes involving hazardous waste and similar cases, the consequences can be devastating and may force a business to shut down. Sometimes, even business owners who believe they are complying with environmental laws may be accused of an offense that can change their life forever.
