Understanding the penalties for identity theft

From steep fines to time behind bars and a damaged reputation, you may face harsh penalties if you are accused of identity theft. In Minneapolis, and across Minnesota, identity theft charges have become increasingly prevalent in recent years. At Joseph S. Friedberg Chartered, our team is only too aware that life may never be the same for you if you ever find yourself in this position.

If you are facing charges related to identity theft in Minnesota, the penalties may vary depending on the details surrounding your case. For example, if you are accused of identity theft resulting in a loss of less than $250, you may face both a $1,000 fine and up to 90 days behind bars, according to the Office of the Revisor of Statutes. That fine increases up to $3,000 and you could be sentenced up to a year in a cell if the amount is under $500 and more than $250. However, if you are facing allegations of identity theft resulting in over $35,000 in losses, you could face both $100,000 in fines and be sentenced to prison for as many as 20 years.

Sometimes, identity theft accusations have wide-reaching repercussions that extend far beyond prison time and fines. For example, if you are facing identity theft charges, your employer may terminate your position, leaving you with financial hardships that affect you and your family members as well. To make matters worse, your reputation may be damaged, which could make it difficult to find another job and may also affect your standing in the community and relationships with friends.
